After having passed the entrance to Jockey’s Ridge State Park numerous times on my previous trips to the Outer Banks and seeing a glimpse of the dunes from the road, we finally decided to visit. It was just already after 6pm when we arrived, and although the sky was filled with dark clouds, there were still gorgeous views all around. The park encompasses 426 acres of sand dunes, the largest on the East Coast, that hug the shores of the Roanoke Sound. These expansive desert dunes offer hours of adventure walking, kite flying, and sandboarding. The next chance I get to head back to the Outer Banks, I plan to spend more time walking along the sand ridges and hopefully seeing some amazing sunrises over the dunes.
